Since he arrived at Rescue, Wally has heard many volunteers talk about socialization so he decided to ask some people just what that was all about. One volunteer said that socialization is the act of exposing a puppy to the world. Another volunteer said it was learning how to be comfortable as a pet within human society. Another said that if socialization doesn't happen early, puppies can become more cautious of anything they haven't previously encountered. Wally actually saw a checklist to keep track of what puppy needs to be exposed such as kids in a playground, people in wheelchairs, people who are singing and dancing, people in uniforms. Who would have thought it could be so complicated?? Wally is eighteen months of age so he knows he has a lot of catching up to do because it's almost as if he is living in a little protective bubble that must be burst so he can learn about all the world has to offer. And that includes people who will love him and care for him and about whom he needn't be anxious. Of course, he also needs to learn some basic obedience skills do he can be the best doggie citizen there can be! Wally needs to live in a home which has experience with the German Shepherd Dog. Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems. Our adoption process begins with completing an application on-line. A phone screening will soon follow, and lastly a home visit will be conducted by our volunteers.
