Rudi has come a long way since arriving in our care just before Thanksgiving. Born just before the fourth of July, youd hope for a free-spirited little girl, but her early months deprived her of much in the way of socialization skills. Her first reaction to anything new is suspicion and fear, but she has recently calmed down greatly. She gets on very well with her foster brothers and sisters who seem to sense that she needs extra understanding and patience. When she first arrived, she barked for hours on end in an apparent effort to communicate with the dogs and person near her or at least to get some interaction with them. That behavior has (thankfully) abated over the last month; however, any new thing in her life can bring on an attack of fear barking. She has developed a bond with Dallas (another fearful dog) and the two play for several hours a day. It is not unusual to find them sharing the same bed even though one often ends up spilling off of it. Rudi is fairly close to being housebroken. If she can get outside, there are no accidents in the house; however, she has not yet developed the holding skill for more than a little while. She never messes in her crate or in the master bedroom where she sleeps with the rest of the pack. Food is a major love in her life. She has filled out a good bit in the last month and will nag the dispenser of food as the dinner (breakfast & lunch) hour approaches. When the food is being prepared, she races to the crate she eats in and barks excitedly until her dish arrives. Then she eats quickly and is ready to get out and play some more. Rudi is learning to walk quietly on a leash and knows her sit command, especially if there is a treat in the offing. When alone, she takes the treat very gently. When she is surrounded by the pack, she grabs but is learning to restrain herself and take her proper order in the distribution of the mid-morning treat. In a little while she will have more confidence that she wont be skipped in the distribution process. Now that she is comfortable in her foster home, she has begun to explore everything. Anything that can be taken apart for deeper examination should be kept out of her reach. She has recently taken to trying her hand at cuddling against her foster moms legs at any opportunity. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100%25 tax deductible. Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems. Our adoption process begins with completing an application on-line. A phone screening will soon follow, and lastly a home visit will be conducted by our volunteers.
